Dear CVSD Community,

I am excited and honored to serve as your superintendent for the 2024-25 school year. Having worked in this system since 1999—first as a sub, then as a long-term Spanish substitute teacher (my apologies to that class of 7th graders who I’m sure needed additional help after my efforts!), English teacher, and finally as an administrator—I encountered no shortage of parents, students, faculty, and staff who uttered the following words upon hearing of my appointment: “Congrats! Umm…why would you want this role?” Their question sounded like one a person might ask an ultra-marathoner, arctic swimmer, or local legislator. My students at CVU were certain it was all about the snow days.

I’m sure the trepidation expressed by my colleagues and community members comes from the challenges ahead. Like many districts across Vermont, we face an unprecedented fiscal climate, a polarized political landscape, and a national narrative about education that is unjust—at best.

And while those challenges are real and sobering, for twenty-five years I’ve witnessed the daily joys inherent in our schools. I’ve seen the transformation in our kids as they discover their path, purpose, and interdependence. I have been surrounded by laughter as students engage with new friends and teachers. I’ve worked with educators who dedicate their lives to the betterment of young people. And even on the most difficult days that may not include much laughter and joy, I've been inspired watching our families, students, and community find the resilience and resolve to grow and move forward.

Honestly, when I think about it, who wouldn’t want to be in the position to support our schools?

Our CVSD community is a special one—a community that deserves our care and full attention. We share the knowledge that our kids will internalize and evolve what we—employees, families, and community members alike—create together. I look forward to navigating the challenges and joys ahead with you.

It’s an honor.

Thank you.

Adam Bunting
